Eating with Braces
While you have braces, you can continue to eat all your favorite foods, but cut hard fruits and veggies into smaller, bite-sized bits. This will reduce the potential for detachment of a bracket from the tooth or prevent bent archwires. For the same reason, remove any meat from the bone. There are a few things you’ll need to avoid, like hard and crunchy candies, not only because of damage to the braces but to reduce sugar coming in contact with the teeth. If you have any questions about what you can and can’t eat, check out the food guide portion of your Owner's Manual.
Braces Home Care
When you get your braces at The Brace Place, you’ll also receive an Oral B electric toothbrush, which has a built-in two-minute timer. We ask that this be used in the morning and evening. An interdental cleaning brush is also provided with instructions to use it after all meals. Optional cleaning products such as Plax or a fluoride mouthwash can also be used. Step by step brushing and flossing instructions can be found in your Owner’s Manual.
Dealing with Discomfort
No one is happy when braces hurt. The worst part of pain is not knowing what is wrong and how to make it better. So, the first step is to check your Owner's Manual to see if there is a home remedy for the discomfort you are feeling. The second step is to call our Scarborough or Toronto orthodontic office to schedule an earlier visit. If necessary, the third step is to call Dr. Gurza’s emergency number and receive immediate assistance.
